The police in Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria, have arrested one 50-year-old Yahaya Abubakar and 39 others for vandalising government facilities, offices of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and houses of politicians in the state.

The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, SP Mohammed Shehu, made this known in a statement made available to SaharaReporters on Friday.

The police spokesperson said the suspects took advantage of the announcement of the governorship election results on Tuesday to embark on jubilation that later turned to violence, leading to the destruction and looting of government facilities, APC offices and houses, mostly those of politicians.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Kolo Yusuf, who led Joint Police and other security agencies brought the situation under control and thereafter arrested 26 suspects in connection with the incident. Area Commanders and DPOs (Divisional Police Officers) also embarked on similar exercise in their respective areas to avert escalation.

“The ongoing investigation by the police detectives led to the arrest of another fourteen (14) suspects and recovery of looted and vandalised properties.

“The Commissioner of Police, while appealing for calm, reassures for diligent investigation with a view to arresting fleeing suspects and their collaborators for prosecution as well as recovering the looted property,” part of the statement read.

The PPRO further listed other looted items recovered from the suspects as including one 5,000 litre tank; one Solar Panel; six bags of POP cement; two speakers; one ‘Caterpillar’ radiator; two rugs; one freezer; one bundle of armoured cable wire; three window burglary proofs and one big gate.
